These analyses are used to set up and fine-tune product strategies, guaranteeing reliability of results and compliance with deadlines. What are your day-to-day responsibilities? My role is to monitor the competitors of three of our thrombosis products. I gather market information and draw up recommendations based on these analyses. I develop short and medium-term sales-forecasting systems. This necessitates being in contact with healthcare agents. I also ensure that strategic intelligence and performance indicators are updated. What is the educational background needed? Market Research Associates are generally graduates from business school or have a scientific background. At sanofi-aventis, it is preferred to have at least six months’ experience in pharmaceutical market research. What are some of the core competencies needed for this job? This function requires of course marketing knowledge, statistical ability and analytical skills. You must also be rigorous with a good analytical approach and, most important, you must be enquiring: you have to be constantly aware of market trends. Considering the investment involved, you must be sure your decision is the right one when you launch a product! What attracted you to this job in sanofi-aventis? At the end of my studies in Business school, I was offered a 6-month internship in the International Market Research Department with sanofi-aventis. After that, I was hired on a permanent basis immediately after this work-experience. I really like working in close relation with the marketing teams, we’re making progress together and that’s very rewarding! How do you see the career possibilities? It is possible to continue further in Market Research, or to move across to product management or even sales. Laura, Purchasing Executive, UKWhat does the job of Purchasing Executive involve?The purchasing executive optimises the purchase of products, goods or services. He meets the needs of internal clients in accordance with the purchasing policy defined for that particular function. What are your day-to-day responsibilities? I take part in the client brief which describes my client’s needs and identifies the appropriate suppliers. Then I negotiate the offer conditions and participate in the choice of best supplier. What is the educational background needed? A degree in Science/Management/Business or specific training with a specialisation in Purchasing. What are some of the core competencies needed for this job? Good communication and knowing how to negotiate are essential! I’m in constant relation with internal customers and suppliers. A true service-oriented approach and knowing the art of negotiation are also required. You must also have full command of ethical, legal and financial issues. What attracted you to this job in sanofi-aventis? After a year and a half’s experience in the purchasing function of another business sector, I was quickly able to assume my new position. What I find fascinating about Purchasing is the need for strong interpersonal skills. I’m constantly in contact with my internal customers and external suppliers. This is a daily challenge which motivates me. The Purchasing function also requires that you understand the activities of the function for which you are responsible to provide appropriate solutions. How do you see the career possibilities?
